Optometrist or ophthalmologist, who are they … (part 1)

An ophthalmologist is a doctor who is involved in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases. There are other names for this medical specialty – optometrist, from the word “eye”, eye doctor or eye socket.

Few people do not know who such an ophthalmologist is. You may never have heard about who an audiologist is, never went to an appointment with a traumatologist, but through this doctor, an oculist, we all go through, even if everything is okay with us. After all, the need to visit him is included in any physical examination during employment, when obtaining a driver’s license, the child enters kindergarten, during pregnancy.

The most important source of information about the world around a person is his eyes. With the help of the eyes, a person receives 90% of all information. Thanks to our vision, we perceive objects, their shape, size, position in space and distance from us. And if something is wrong with our main source of information, for example, we do not see well into the distance or, on the contrary, do not see near, then the quality of perception of life changes in a negative direction.

An ophthalmologist can be contacted with all problems associated with the eyes. The name of this medical specialty comes from the Greek word ophtalmos, which means eye.

Separately, the science of ophthalmology is engaged in the treatment of the ocular environment, which includes the orbit, bone structures, fiber. For the treatment of eyes, various diagnostic methods and techniques are created. The work of an ophthalmologist is to treat and prevent eye diseases, maintaining our vision at the proper level.

In our modern world, health problems happen sooner or later in everyone, which is why it is very important to visit doctors for examination. Recently, given the real pace of life, people are increasingly having vision problems. High loads at school, institute, at work, all this leads to visual impairment. Vision for a person is very important, in the absence of it he will feel very uncomfortable and unbearably lonely in the surrounding world. An optometrist, if necessary, carries out vision prophylaxis, corrects it, advises to perform a set of exercises to strengthen and restore.

Appeal to the optometrist today is a common occurrence. After all, a computer takes up the entire working day of most people. An irresponsible attitude towards one’s own vision threatens with a whole “bunch” of problems.

If you notice that your vision has begun to decline, then you have a direct path to the ophthalmologist-ophthalmologist. Such a problem cannot be postponed until later.

The fact is that visual impairment can occur quite rapidly. If you miss your chance, then it may be too late. We must never forget that good vision is, first of all, the possibility of a normal existence. You can go to the eye doctor with any visual problems, starting with the banal “flies before the eyes” and ending with cataracts. To date, astigmatism, myopia, farsightedness, glaucoma, cataracts are considered the most common eye diseases. Many will now ask: “What are the causes of the development of eye diseases.” There are actually many reasons. This is an unhealthy diet, constant, high eye strain, lack of vitamins, and a hereditary predisposition.

Also, do not forget that the selection of glasses and contact lenses should be according to the recommendations of an optometrist. They must be matched correctly. Otherwise, in the case of poor selection of optics, you can damage your eyesight – headaches will appear, tension in the eyes will increase, eyes will become inflamed, they will respond to contact lenses with reddening proteins

Profession history

The earliest references to the eye and eye diseases are already mentioned in the writings of Hippocrates and the ancient Egyptian scripts. In the Middle Ages, ophthalmology received a good level of development. In Europe in the 17th century, the German scientist I. Kepler established that the function of light perception is not performed by the lens (as previously thought), but by the retina, while the lens serves as one of the light-refracting media of the eye. In the same period, the idea of cataract as a clouding of the lens (French physician P. Brissot) arose. In the 18th century, a technique was developed for cataract removal (French ophthalmologist J. Daviel). In Europe, as an independent branch of scientific medical knowledge, ophthalmology was formed mainly at the beginning of the 19th century, when special eye treatment facilities and departments of eye diseases at universities began to open (1818-1838, Austria, Hungary).

After the invention of the eye mirror, an ophthalmoscope (G. Helmholtz, 1851), a detailed study of diseases of the deep parts of the eye (optic nerve, retina, choroid) began. Research in the field of physiological optics also dates to the mid-19th century; a doctrine on refraction and accommodation of the eye was created. During the 19th century, operational ophthalmology purposefully developed (many operations related to glaucoma, extraction of foreign bodies from the eye with a magnet, etc., were put into practice).
